This fourth and final set... well I am just madly in love with it right now. I asked Aaron to show me a lighting scenario for a moody look. There is one light with the beauty dish on, just outside the frame to light Nicole's face, actually, it was in the corner of the shot in the first three images. That gave us that beautiful directional light. One light off to the right with an umbrella, turned down low for just a touch of fill, and that nice highlight in her hair. Then Aaron set one light just behind Nicole and angled it up to just graze along the backdrop. I love the look. For the full length images we have the two lights with umbrellas on the right, and one for fill on the left. Pretty fabulous. :)

Thank you so much to Aaron from All-Star Studios for this lighting session, I cannot wait to put everything I learned into practice and mix it up with my shooting style. And thanks to Nicole Jolly for coming along and giving us something beautiful to photograph. :)

Nicole brought out an edgy look, complete with shiny black hair... so Aaron demonstrated how he lights for an edgy effect. Turns out, it's very similar to the first setup... bare flash placed in just the right location to light her face and eyes, and give dramatic fall off and stark shadow.

Settings were 1/125 f/8 ISO 125

1/250 f/8 ISO 125

I love how this looks in black+white, look at that beautiful curve Nicole made.

Settings were 1/250 f/8 ISO 125 again, but we moved back to the big backdrop and set up the two umbrellas to the left, and one for fill on the right.

We moved to a different spot in the studio for this set. Nicole is standing right against white seamless. Aaron set up two umbrellas 'stacked' for the main light on the right. We had started with just the one light, but needed a larger source to light a deep shadow at her waist. There is also a fill light coming in from the left. I l-o-v-e how the shadow looks in these... and Nicole always rocks it!

I love this light, along with her look, it just works. But black+white or color?

Settings were 1/250 f/8 ISO 160

I had the honor of being chosen to receive a 4 hour lighting session from portrait photographer Aaron Lindemann of All-Star Studios. If that isn't awesome enough... Nicole Jolly came along to model for us! I love my job... this is continuing education.

We went through several different lighting set-ups that he uses a lot and talked about different ways to make the lighting really work for your subject and the image as a whole.

Time flew by too fast though, I didn't want it to be over. I am a sponge soaking up all the knowledge. :)

Here is a series of images from our first set, I love how they look, thanks for sharing your skills with me Aaron! You really helped me connect the dots.

Aaron started by setting up his beauty dish just out of frame, Nicole is well in front of a white seamless backdrop. Settings: 1/125 f/9 ISO 160

Same settings... but look at that smile!

Same settings again... but Aaron set up another light, this one with an umbrella, to give us a soft hair light and a bit of fill.

This one is the same again, except we have another flash (bare) right behind Nicole, pointing at the backdrop.

pinewood derby { boy scout adventures with Cole }

My middle son finally joined Boy Scouts last Fall after much deliberation. We wanted him to join... he wanted nothing to do with it. Finally I told him he's going to a meeting. If after the meeting he still doesn't want to join, that's fine. (Mean Mommy!) So guess what happened? He loves scouts!

Here are some pictures from Cole's first Pinewood Derby race. He worked hard on his car and did the work himself. He is especially proud of the paint job (and who wouldn't be?). Cole didn't win but it was a great experience for him and a lesson in good sportsmanship. He has big ideas for his car for next Spring!

green bay wedding photographer's new name { it's a new day! }

It was a really tough decision, and I did a lot of research on ‘re-branding’ your business and renaming… and one thing they all talked about was renaming can be a good idea if you feel you made a mistake with the original name, or it just no longer works. Well, that’s right where I’m at! I love the new beginning that Images by Casi gave me, but it doesn’t sound fresh, even with my funny-spelled name “Images by…” is so overused now.

So the new name, now and forever, is Casi Lea Photography!

Casi Lea is my given name, first and middle. I realize that “your name photography” is used a ton as well, but I’ve always loved my name and it is different.. and it kinda rhymes.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to make LOTS of changes. Website, pricing and product offerings, workflow, how I meet with clients and show my work… it’s all heading for serious improvements!

I will also be able to announce the really BIG reason that now is the time for a name change and fresh new start… it’s really exciting. Well it really is for me… and hopefully for you too!

Can't post on my blog without a picture! My munchkins playing in the mud on Easter Sunday, the sun finally shone and it was so warm out! Love.

And I promise to catch up on blog posts asap!

I've been asked about Trash the Dress photo shoots many times, usually from women who think it's crazy and would never dream of 'ruining' such an expensive garment. Honestly, these shoots really aren't for the faint of heart. But if you would love to have another photo shoot with your beautiful dress on that allows you to show off your personality and really get creative, you're going to love a Trash the Dress session.

You don't even have to trash your dress, most of the time, you can drop it off at the dry cleaners and they will fix it right up for you. Well unless you're like some brides and really want to tear up the dress and cover it in mud! It's totally up to you how messy you want to get.

I cannot wait for these two to get hitched! Aimee and Nick were a blast for our snowy winter engagement shoot last Saturday. They are fun, and up for anything, and just adorable together. The red heart balloon was perfect for a Valentines Day weekend session. And how romantic is it that Nick had a plan to give Aimee the ring she so badly wanted and had no idea she was getting during our session so I could get it on camera? A photographers dream! <3 I'm so happy that I was in on it.

Sometimes, I can't even believe how lucky I am to be doing this for a living. I could do these types of shoots every day and never get bored!

Anna put on some medieval / fairytale / fantasy threads and Duchess, the curly Andalusian, wore her finest. :) We shot this Wednesday afternoon... for any of you reading this who live in the area, you already know just how cold it was. We all braved the 8 degree temperatures... and it was completely worth it!

Anna and Duchess will be appearing at the Midwest Horse Fair this spring... and back on Images by Casi after her senior photo session later this year!

Today could not have been a better day to get out of the house and see some draft horses doing what they do best! When I got a facebook invite for 'Old Fashion Logging Day' only a half hour from my house, I knew we had to go... and I'm so glad we did! The event was put on by the Frontier Farming Association of Northeast Wisconsin. There were several teams skidding logs out of the woods and into a clearing. We also got to go on a sleigh ride through the forest and really enjoyed the 'chili dump' and all the nice people hanging out by the bonfire.

Here are a few pictures I took today, and they are all done here in black and white to enhance that old fashion look. :) I will post them on my website soon for anyone who would like to purchase prints!

An amazing quote plucked straight from Spring All Arabians website for their gorgeous purebred Arabian stallion SAA Snort N Blow. I've watched this horse perform for years at the Midwest Horse Fair, and had the pleasure of photographing him this summer at an International Morab Breeders Association open show.

I just wanted to post one of my favorites of him from show day, taken as he was exiting the indoor arena, and let everybody know that he is competing in the 'Most Beautiful Horse' contest on the Midwest Horse Fair website. Go find him and vote!

Have I mentioned lately how awesome my clients are? These two are no exception! They made me laugh through the entire session, and that's not a bad thing.

Yes another engagement shoot! October has been a crazy busy month for me, and the majority of my fall sessions have been e-sessions. Can you feel the love?

Internet... meet Vicki and Sam... they are getting married next Spring and picked me to be their wedding photographer. Vicki and I were friends looooong long ago in our school years... I remember sleeping over a her house for a birthday party in third grade! We've been mostly out of touch since high school until recently (thank you Facebook!). Her man Sam is an amazing guy and they are so genuine, I feel honored to make pictures of them.

Look at those big blues! I had the opportunity to photograph this charming handsome fella yesterday and I couldn't be happier. Spencer was wide awake when I got there so we got lots of shots of his amazing eyes, we even went outside for a picture in the baby basket.

Ahh these two are so cute! I was so happy to do some engagement pictures for them. They are planning a vintage themed wedding so we incorporated some old books, teacups, a camera from the 40's, and some other props into our set and I just love how it turned out. The first thought that came to my mind as I drove up to this farm Sunday was "Wow I feel like I'm back in Kentucky!". I love this farm and it's beautiful barns with dutch doors on each stall, white fencing everywhere, and a trail down to a wood bridge over a small river and just a short walk to beautiful pastures with big cottonwood trees (including one that is the second largest in the state). Makes me sigh. I just love horse country. Hard to believe it's so close to the city.

As cool as the farm is, the people and horses were even more amazing! Husband and wife team Amy and Dave with their 6 horses (collectively), Kristie with her gelding Lightning, and Anna with her grey mare Duchess. Everyone was fun to be around and have I ever mentioned how much I love Andalusians? It was a long day of shooting, but totally and utterly worth it! We also did Paul's (Amy and Dave's son) senior portraits around the farm, but he gets his own blog post so keep watching!

Location location location! Words can't even describe how happy I am with the locations we chose for Megan and Will's engagement photo session. We started out at Fonferek's Glen, which spans 74 acres, and found several sweet spots to capture their images. Of course, we had to include the 30 foot waterfall, so we did that first. The very first image we shot was a keeper! But they are so cute, there won't be many that aren't! :-) We wrapped up in downtown Green Bay for some urban style shots.

Here are some highlights from their shoot today to tide you over until the whole shoot is processed. I'm so happy with this entire shoot... and I'm grateful that they picked me to be their photographer! The wedding next Summer will be amazing, I am sure of it and I can't wait! Think I can say 'I' one more time?

{ announcement } Images for a Cure - photographers uniting for a common cause

As artisans and creators, we may labor under the ideal that our work can effect change in our world - that what we do personally and creatively contributes to the betterment of humankind. But what if it were more than an ideal or seemingly elusive goal? What if you were given an opportunity to positively effect change through partnering with an organization that is already pursuing that goal? And all it would take was a click of the shutter..

This is an excerpt from the Images for a Cure mission statement. I am so excited to announce that Images by Casi will be participating in this amazing endeavor to raise money for the The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®.

BCRF-funded research has helped save lives and significantly improved the quality of care and survivorship for tens of thousands of breast cancer patients in the past decade and a half. The research itself has revealed that “cure” is a mosaic made up of as many approaches to diagnosing, treating, preventing and surviving as there are different types of breast cancer.

I am donating my time and talent for one day in November with 100% of the proceeds from session fees going directly to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation®. After the sessions, I am personally going to donate 25% of all print orders received from these sessions.

On November 6th, 2010 I will be available for 5-7 sessions beginning with a morning appointment as early as 7am. If I can add more than this many sessions… I will! I am accepting any kind of session request at the same price of $125 for a 30-90 minute session. These sessions will have to take place within 20 miles of Green Bay so I can get around and not spend too much of the day driving. I know of some amazing outdoor locations, but we can always shoot at your home, or we can rent studio space for your session. Included in your session fee will be:
. 1 8x10 print, 4 5x7s, 16 wallets, and 25 custom designed greeting cards
or
. 5 high resolution images on a disc with a print release, and 25 custom designed greeting cards
or
. 1 16x20 print

If we can fill the date, we will raise more than $1000 to donate! Even if you aren't interested in a session, please consider donating. Just follow this link to donate. That is the same link you will use to pay your charitable session fee when booking an IFAC session with me for November 6th. If you would like to participate, but the date doesn't work for you, just let me know and we can schedule your session on a different day.

Yuliya contacted me about doing a TTD session with her boyfriend Andre a while back and we've been planning ever since. She bought this dress just for the photo shoot and they found the perfect location in Elkhart Lake. There was lots of neat landscaping, but best of all is this beautiful lake full of crystal clear water. Maybe it's because they aren't from around here (they're originally from Belarus)... but they have the right idea. Life is short so live it!

Finally! My opportunity to create bridal portraits in a vineyard, it has been a dream of mine for a while now. We started shooting at 7pm, so the light in our first set of images in a beautiful grassy field nearby had the perfect diffused soft golden light. I love it. The vineyard was gorgeous and the pictures with her running in the dress remind me a little bit of my favorite childhood movie Labrynth. And now I feel old. :D

Oooh I'm so glad Abby contacted me about doing a shoot. I've had this idea brewing in my head all summer long for a homeless themed shoot, but I was pretty sure everyone would think I was crazy... okay so maybe I am. I wanted sad, dilapidated, unkempt, and depressed... and Abby gave me all that and still looked gorgeous. I love her. Especially her trash bag dress... genius!

Can't wait to finish processing the rest of this shoot. We lost light towards the end of our shoot, but I am loving the grainy look for this.

Next is a themed bridal shoot, with some possibly trashing of the dress... can you say YAY!?!

Last night I had the opportunity to meet, and make pictures of this beautiful girl, Ashley. She is a real sweetheart and a hard worker too, she will go far in life. We did some pictures with Thunder, an Arabian gelding owned by Marge, and then took a drive to downtown Omro for some more urban style portraits. It was fun walking around and finding some cool spots to take pictures, I wouldn't mind going back there sometime!

I'm so glad Shannon and her Mom chose me to be their photographer for Shannon's graduation photos! She is a natural beauty. It was a hike down to Palmyra, but totally worth it, we made some amazing imagery. We started at Cornerstone Reining Horses where her Quarter Horse is boarded. Sloopy was such a good boy, even though the lush green grass was irresistible, we got some really cute pictures of them together. Shannon also included her Border Collie, Tipper, in some of the pictures. He was a really good sport too! And so adorable. For the last part of this session we went to the Industrial Park and had some fun with the waterfalls!

Thanks to Shannon's family for helping with the shoot, 'getting ears', and especially to her sister Megan who just happens to be a stylist!

Sorry it's been a while since my last post, I have been battling exploding computers for the last few weeks! Okay, they didn't really explode... but that's how it feels to me when I am cut off from processing pictures from my photo shoots! It's a long story, but the back-up to my back-up computer for my main workhorse computer that died, is just not good enough... we my hubby and I went shopping and spent exactly what it would have cost to repair the old one, on a brand spanking new one... and here I am again! :-)

Let's get to the good stuff: this beautiful 3 year old filly suitably named Angel. She is a Quarter Horse/Friesian cross, and a total sweetheart, AND an amazing mover!

I ventured all the way over to LaCrosse to photograph Amanda Wilson's four-legged baby and we were dodging raindrops to get the images due to some serious weather that day. Thankfully, the really bad stuff didn't hit until I was already on the road home!

Eddie is such a handsome fella! Just four months old and look how strong he is too! Tara and Mya are such vibrant young ladies, little girls really are made of sugar and spice you know!

Thursday finally brought about the perfect day to get Copper View Farm's third photo shoot of the year done! We photographed GiGi; the beautiful buckskin half-Arab filly, Rock; the very independant and gorgeous chestnut Arabian colt, Lily; the floating buckskin half-Arab 3 year old mare, and the girls Tara and Mya with their favorite horse Tia, and then some pictures of baby Eddie! Last minute yesterday, Bobbi Jo gave me a call because she suddenly had the day off of work. Her and her friend Sarah had just asked me, the day before, if I would be interested in doing another Trash the Dress session... this time with TWO ladies in their wedding gowns. Of course, I was ecstatic! So we all got our stuff together and did the shoot right away last night!

It took me a couple of hours, but I managed to whiz through all the images of Brittany & Jeff's engagement session so they could see some pictures right away! It was hard to choose favorites but these are some of the images that grabbed me.

Earlier this afternoon I met the bride & groom to be at the Green Bay Botanical Gardens for their shoot. I hadn't been there in so many years, they have really done some amazing work in there, especially the Koi pond! Anyway, Brittany & Jeff were great sports, had a lot of fun, and are obviously totally mad about each other. Makes my job easy!

On Monday I had the privilege of heading back out to Copper View Farm to photograph Kaseyn { their amazing and talented Arabian stallion } and the rest of the herd, including a couple VERY pregnant mares, a few feisty young ones, a few feisty older ones, and a BRAND NEW baby! Skylar had just foaled that morning... it was very cool to photograph the new filly, Energy, at just hours old.

Kaseyn is featured in the children's book I 'illustrated' on the 'horsey rolling' page, the picture was taken when he was just 2 years old... look at him all grown up now! You can find Busy Horsies on Amazon.

{ midwest horse fair 2010 } wisconsin equine photographer

So quickly the horse fair came and went! My daughter and I are wishing it would last for a week so we would have enough time to see everything. We enjoyed the rodeo on Friday night, breed demos for the Arabians Andalusians and Mustangs, a little bit of wandering around, and the show jumping competition on Saturday. { totally 80's } green bay fashion photographer

I had the opportunity to attend what was, quite possibly, THE coolest photography event of my life yesterday... and I made the most of it! STUN Photography Group put on another amazing event { remember the Classic Car Shoot? } and I'm just so happy I could be there. The models were all fabulous, the photographers were helpful and friendly, and the live music was amazing! I even got the guts up to pose for the 'yearbook' style portrait that was available to everyone there, can't wait to see what that looks like. Fox 11 even did a story on the event.

So anyway, here are my favorites after just skimming through hundreds of images... more to come.

I can't believe handsome little Mitchell is already a month old! Where did the month of March disappear to? This cutie patooty is so strong and healthy, look at him holding his head up. He was a great sport for his session, he even took a nap at the very end. Big brother Christopher joined in the fun too, aren't they adorable together? Oooooh I'm so happy to have finally gotten the opportunity to do a full on Trash the Dress session. TTD shoots are about having fun, and we definitely did! I'm almost speechless. ;-) Thank you so much to my model Bobbi Jo for being such a good sport { the mud on her dress was totally her idea } you ROCK!

No matter in the shade at a run down shop, backlit on a Harley, or in full sun in the mud, trash the dress could be the most daring, dramatic, romantic memory of your lifetime. Baby Mitchell is here and he is healthy and handsome! I brought my portable studio to Tricia's house when he was a week old and captured these shots. He was feisty, but serenely peaceful once we patiently waited him out. It was so much fun being able to photograph a newborn, and this one is so loved.

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to visit the Freischmidt family to make some pictures. I set up my portable backdrop stand and white muslin in their { very big } family room and started posing. They were all a lot of fun to work with and we got some great shots. We took some outside too as the outside of their home was gorgeous and made a unique backdrop. I can't wait to go back in July to photograph their Miniature Horses!
